Lions' Caldwell Honored As Team's First African-American Coach
DETROIT (WWJ) -- Football season is yet to start and Lions head coach, Jim Caldwell is being honored.
The Detroit Historical Society's Black Historic sites committee recognized Caldwell and four others Friday evening for being African American "firsts" in their fields of endeavor.
"Quite an award it is," Caldwell said. "Obviously, I'm certainly appreciative of it and it's a great way to be welcomed into the city."
Caldwell said that since he and his family arrived in the Motor City, it's been a world-wind experience.
"It's been a lot of fun. We came in on January 15 -- we were certainly welcomed and there was a lot of fan excitement," Caldwell said. "You can tell that around here there is a lot of enthusiasm around the team."
Caldwell is the first African-American coach hired by the Lions. This is the 43rd Annual event for the committee were others honored include Aubrey Lee Sr., the first African-American Vice President at then NBD bank.
