Lincoln Park Rejects Consent Agreement; Emergency Manager A Step Away
LINCOLN PARK (AP) - The City Council in the Detroit suburb of Lincoln Park has voted to reject a consent agreement with the state to fix the city's finances.
The council's decision was by a 4-3 vote Tuesday night.
Unless the council reconvenes and changes its vote by Friday, Gov. Rick Snyder may appoint an emergency manager.
Mayor Tom Karnes told the Detroit Free Press that the vote by City Council "takes the voice of the people out of everything to do with running the city (and) puts control in the hands of one person."
Snyder last month confirmed his earlier determination that a financial emergency exists in Lincoln Park, saying its budget was $90,000 in the red by last summer. And the state says a $4.5 million balance in the city's general fund has been depleted over three year.
