Learn To Lower Your Risk Of Developing Type 2 Diabetes At One Of Metro Detroit's Prevention Classes

DETROIT (WWJ) -- About 30 million Americans have Type 2 diabetes, and almost one in three adults have prediabetes. The onset condition can put you at risk for many health problems including eye, heart and kidney issues.

Adults who have risk factors such as elevated blood sugar and excess body weight can put them at a higher risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.

But there are things you can do to prevent Type 2 diabetes and the medical community in metro Detroit is offering classes to help.

In an effort to educate and inform, the Diabetic Prevention Program will be held throughout metro Detroit from March until June. Dr. Earlexia Norwood, with Henry Ford Health System, says small changes can make a big difference in preventing diabetes.

"We know that most individuals who have prediabetes in about a five-year time period will develop diabetes if we don't intervene," Norwood said. "If you lose anywhere between five and seven percent of your weight, you can prevent diabetes."

The course will consist of 16 weekly one-hour sessions and will cover a wide variety of topics such as diet, exercise and stress reduction.
