Lead Boats Nearing Finish Line At Port Huron-Mackinac Race

PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) - The lead boats are nearing the finish line in the 91st running of the Port Huron to Mackinac Island sailboat race.

An online tracking system shows Il Mostro about 13 miles from the finish line early Sunday afternoon, with Windquest about 23 miles out.

The Bell's Beer Bayview Mackinac Race started Saturday, with about 250 teams entered. Race chairman Peter Wenzler says things got under way "with a decent breeze out of the Southeast" and "plenty of heat."

Winners are determined based on a handicapping system.

The event caps a week of festivities in Port Huron, and thousands of spectators typically watch on shore as the fleet makes its way in a parade to the start.

Detroit's Bayview Yacht Club organizes the event.
