Lawsuit Filed In Death Of 4-Year-Old U.P. Girl At School Gym

GWINN, Mich. (AP) -- A school superintendent in the Upper Peninsula says he hopes there's an agreeable way to settle a lawsuit over the death of a 4-year-old girl who was struck by a wood structure in a gym.

The 325-pound structure was part of a cover on a wall at Gwinn High School. It fell on Amarah Filizetti last September, and she died the next day. Her mother was coaching cheerleaders.

Amarah's family has filed a lawsuit against the Gwinn district and others, accusing them of negligence. It's alleged that school employees had warned that the structure needed to be reattached to the gym wall.

Gwinn Superintendent Tom Jayne tells The Mining Journal that the district is "extremely sorry" for what happened. He says he's hoping for an "amicable resolution."
