Largest Craft Beer Venture Ever Coming To Detroit -- Meet HopCat!

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) A new venture promises to bring more of what hip metro Detroiters love to the city -- including craft beer and outdoor summertime fun.

Planners announced Thursday that a new business named HopCat will open at 4265 Woodward, transforming a historic building into the city's largest beer bar.

It'll bring 100 new jobs to a 11,000 square foot facility, organizers say, and feature 130 taps. Highlighting Michigan craft beer will be the focus of the $3.3 million venture.

It will take over the former Agave restaurant building near The Whitney, which has been vacant since 2006.

"This location puts the state's largest selection of draft beer within blocks of Wayne State University, TechTown and the future home of the Detroit Red Wings. We also are thrilled to be next door to a stop on the M-1 Rail streetcar line, which will be a vital connector for our customers and our team members," said Mark Seller, Michigan native and founder of HopCat Grand Rapids, in a statement.

The Detroit location will feature an outdoor beer garden and live music.

MLive reported the first HopCat location opened in downtown Grand Rapids in 2008 and was followed by an East Lansing location last July. Last week, the Grand Rapids HopCat was named the No. 1 brewpub in the U.S. by RateBeer.com for a second time.
