Lansing Mayor Calls For Moratorium On New Medical Pot Shops

LANSING (AP) - Mayor Virg Bernero wants to stop further openings of shops that sell medical marijuana in Lansing until new regulations governing them are approved by the city council.

Bernero called Monday for a moratorium on new dispensaries, saying "enough is enough" and that there are sufficient numbers of them in the city "to serve the needs of medical marijuana patients."

Bernero also says a new ordinance in Lansing should move dispensaries from neighborhoods and into commercial and industrial areas.

Michigan voters approved marijuana use for some chronic medical conditions in 2008.

Detroit's City Council adopted a zoning law last year that prohibits dispensaries from operating within 1,000 feet of a church, school, park, liquor store, other marijuana shops and places considered drug-free zones under city law, including libraries and child-care centers.
