Jaguars' Smith Goes From Brother's Death To Child's Birth

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Three days after Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Telvin Smith's brother was shot and killed in their hometown of Valdosta, Georgia, Smith's girlfriend gave birth to their son.

Jaguars defensive coordinator Todd Wash says the boy was born early Wednesday.

The third-year pro from Florida State remains on a leave of absence from the Jaguars (2-7), and his status for Sunday's game at Detroit (5-4) remains uncertain.

Wash says Smith is "a leader for us and what he goes through we go through on defense. ... So he's been up and down with his emotions. We'll find out later today what his opportunity will be for this week. Whatever's best for Telvin is the best thing for our team and for himself."

Smith ranks second on the team with 71 tackles.
