It's Michigan! Roll With The Weather Punches Advises Greenhouse Owner
DETROIT (WWJ) - High school baseball tryouts, yard clean ups and garden plantings are all on hold thanks to the winter of 2014.
At one local nursery the greenhouses are packed with thousands of budding plants, even though it will be weeks before plants can go into the ground.
"If the weather allows us to and the soil in your ground is thawed, we will have plants out here to plant in late March or April," said George Papadelis owner of Telly's Greenhouse.
He told WWJ Newsradio 950's Marie Osborne that planting season may be delayed by a few weeks this year.
"The ground is frozen," said Papadelis, "really, really frozen down deep - deeper than it has been in decades."
If it helps Papadelis notes that our weather memories in Michigan are relatively short.
"Do you remember the winter of 2011? People were asking for tomatoes in late March and they were upset because I didn't have them," he said.
The first things in the ground will be the frost resistant plants like peas, lettuce and pansy but Papadelis promises that spring will arrive ... eventually.
