It's Dog Day Afternoon On Michigan Matters As The Detroit Zoo Goes To The Birds

(CBS Detroit) The Detroit Zoo is going to the birds -- more specifically penguins -- as Ron Kagan talked about a new penguin exhibit they are building that will open by 2015.

The zoo, one of the region's top tourist destinations, is building a $29.5 million, 33,000-square-foot Polk Penguin Conservation Center, Kagan said during taping of "Michigan Matters".

It is the largest project the zoo has ever undertaken and will be home to 80 penguins of four species.

Also on the show, the focus was on saving dogs as leaders from Macomb and Oakland County shelters took to the stage to bring some four-legged friends available for adoption.

And they also talked about the growing needs of the shelters.

Joanie Toole, administrative supervisor for Oakland County Animal Control & Pet Adoption Center, Kara Clark, who is in charge of volunteers at that center, Chief Jeff Randazzo of the Macomb County Animal Control and Marianne Tear, of Baker College, also appear on the show.
