IRS Addresses Last Minute Tax Filing Woes

DETROIT (WWJ) - The deadline for filing your taxes is a little more than a month away -- however some people may be wondering why they still have not received their tax documents.

Luis Garcia of the IRS, says go to your employer first, and if that doesn't help, don't panic, there is another option.

"You can file a substitute W2 form to file in for what that amount is and you could just use your last pay stub from that employer - fill that information in and how much withholding you have had that you can file that tax return on time," said Garcia.

Garcia says under normal circumstances, most tax documents should be received by the end of January.

He says don't be fooled by email scams either - like ones soliciting your personal information with threats of jail, fines or both, if you don't provide the information demanded.

Garcia says cyber criminals are very crafty when it comes to stealing your money.

"They are taking your information - literally as you are typing it in - they are opening up a withdrawal from your bank account. These guys are very sophisticated."

He says the IRS will never send you an email asking for your personal information. If you do receive an email like this -- don't open it.

Taxpayers have until Wednesday, April 15, 2015 to file their 2014 tax returns and pay any tax due.
