Investigators Seize Records From Macomb County Prosecutor's Office

(CBS DETROIT) State police with a search warrant have removed boxes from the Macomb County prosecutor's office as part of an investigation of how money from forfeited assets was spent.

Lt. Darren Green says the search Wednesday is related to an investigation requested by Attorney General Dana Nessel.

Several county officials, including Executive Mark Hackel, have raised questions about how Prosecutor Eric Smith has spent thousands of dollars from assets tied to alleged crimes. The money has been used to support certain charities and to pay for credit card bills and other expenses.

Smith has defended the spending, saying "every penny" has been spent to "enhance law enforcement." He says there has been misinformation about the use of the money.
