Investigation Underway After 'Suicide By Police' In Battle Creek

BATTLE CREEK (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police are investigating the death of a 19-year-old man who supposedly wanted to commit "suicide by police."

Battle Creek Police say a family member called police Sunday morning saying the man had taken a relative's gun and that he "wanted to die." The man then called 911 several times himself, claiming to be unarmed at around 11 a.m.

Chief Jim Blocker said that the man ignored "loud and clear" warnings from the officers before pulling a gun from his waistband.

Police told the man to drop his gun, but he refused and shots were fired from both sides.
