International Exchange Program Looking For Host Families
DETROIT (WWJ) - Would you like to develop an international friendship and learn more about another culture - without even traveling?
The city of Detroit is looking for families to host a student or a chaperone from Toyota City, Japan as part of its Sister Cities Program reports WWJ's Brooke Allen.
Eight students and two chaperones will visit Detroit to learn more about American culture.
Rose Love, supervising publicist for the city says you can match the experience when you host a student from another country:
"When a person opens their home to someone from another culture, it is truly an eye-opening experience, especially for the kids," said Love. "Because we have teenagers and we try to have someone of the same age and the same sex there's opportunities to start a life-long friendship for someone from another culture."
In 1965, the city of Detroit and Toyota established an annual student exchange program. The exchange provides students from both countries the opportunity to experience the lifestyles and culture of their sister city counterparts while cultivating cultural and ethnic tolerance.
Detroit high school students visit Toyota one year, while Toyota high school students visit Detroit the following year.
