WSU Grad's 'Game Of Loans' Mortar Board Pokes Fun At Student Debt

(CBS Detroit) Interest is coming! It's funny because it's true.

With more than 25,000 likes on Wayne State University's Facebook page and thousands of shares, this decorated mortar board from Thursday's commencement at the university made the rounds on the Internet.

The hat featured the words "Game of Loans" and "Interest Is Coming" in glued-on gold glitter in the "Game of Thrones" font.

Graduates always pay their debts ...

It brought on a dialogue on the Web about the cost of a college education and the struggle to repay the debt. If you're not a fan of the HBO series "Game of Thrones," the joke references how the characters are preoccupied by the fictional universe's years-long brutal cold seasons. "Winter is coming" is often uttered.

The joke is all-too-real as college students can expect to accrue $30,000 in debt for a bachelors degree.

While getting student loan debt forgiven is next to impossible for most, there are options for repaying college loan debt, and it's important choose the best one for your situation.

The idea of bedazzling your commencement head wear isn't new. Photos of architecture students depicting their favorite buildings on their hats have been dated back to the early 2000s.

In 2014 a U-M Flint student, Alex Benda, offered space on his mortar board for paid advertisers.

Several students were photographed with decked out mortar boards at the 2015 Wayne State University commencement.

With websites including Pinterest and Tumblr cropping up, the trend of mortar board bling has increased in popularity.
