Fatal Rollover Accident Shuts Down I-96 For Hours

DETROIT (WWJ) - A popular section of I-96 in Detroit was closed for hours Friday morning after one person was killed in a rollover accident.

The accident happened just after midnight on westbound I-96 before the Grand River Avenue overpass.

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Mike Campbell said the accident involved one vehicle, which was upside down in the right lane. Other circumstances weren't immediately clear.

One person was killed and had to be extracted from the vehicle, although the victim's identity was not immediately released.

Authorities are expected to discuss details about the crash later Friday.

The westbound lanes were closed for nearly six hours while police were investigating, but have since reopened.
