I-96 Reopens Following Bizarre Overnight Crash

DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities are investigating an overnight accident on I-96 that apparently left a driver without a leg.

The crash happened just after 2 a.m. Friday on westbound I-96 at Davison Avenue.

According to police, the driver of a 2007 Chevy Impala was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control on the exit ramp to Davison and struck an exit sign and guardrail before finally stopping back on the freeway.

Police say the man was not fatally injured, but his leg was ripped off and landed on the freeway during the crash. He was rushed to the hospital and last reported in serious but stable condition.

The freeway was closed for several hours as police investigated the scene, but has since reopened.

The driver's name was not released.

The crash remains under investigation.
