I-94 Reopens After Utility Pole Catches Fire

ROSEVILLE (WWJ) - A section of I-94 has reopened in Roseville and Clinton Township after an earlier fire and downed power lines forced both directions of the freeway to close.

The problem was reported around 4 a.m. Thursday. DTE Energy says the fire started after a car hit a guy-wire near Gratiot Avenue and 13 Mile Road.

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Ron Dewey said sparks were flying from the utility pole "like the Fourth of July."

As a result, eastbound I-94 was shut down between Gratiot Avenue and Little Mack Avenue; and westbound I-94 was shut down between Harper Avenue and Gratiot Avenue. Multi-mile traffic backups were reported before the freeway reopened just before 8 a.m.

The problem also caused a power outage for roughly 650 homes and businesses near the intersection of 13 Mile and Little Mack Avenue.
