Hundreds Participate In Annual Belle Isle Spring Cleanup

DETROIT (AP) - Organizers say about 700 people have participated in an annual cleanup event on Detroit's Belle Isle.

The Detroit Free Press reports the volunteers fanned out Saturday across the island park in the Detroit River. They raked leaves, cleared branches and cleaned up debris.

The event, which has been held since the 1970s, coincides with Earth Day. It's coordinated by the Belle Isle Conservancy and Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Belle Isle's Director of Volunteer Services Genevieve Nowak says this was the first year organizers worked with Riverside Kayak Connections. Experienced boaters assisted with cleanup efforts.
