Hundreds Of Layoffs Coming In June As Ford Cuts Shift At Michigan Assembly Plant

DETROIT (WWJ) - Ford is cutting a shift at its Michigan Assembly Plant this summer.

The company announced 675 hourly and 25 salaried employees at the plant in Wayne will be affected by the layoffs — beginning June 22.

WWJ's Jeff Gilbert reports the layoffs are due to low sales of cars produced at the plant, including the Ford Focus and C-Max Hybrid.

Some workers will be placed in temporary positions, and all will have the first right to new jobs at the company in the future.

UAW-Ford Vice President Jimmy Settles said that, through collective bargaining, they've been able to negotiate provisions that allow protections for members affected by production cuts.
