House Urges Pro Teams To Address Domestic Abuse
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - State lawmakers are urging Michigan's professional sports teams to adopt zero-tolerance domestic violence policies.
The House on Thursday adopted a non-binding resolution to be sent to the owners of each pro franchise in the state. The move comes amid negative publicity for the National Football League for violent, domestic off-the-field encounters involving some of the league's marquee players.
Republican Rep. Klint Kesto of Commerce Township says his resolution sends a clear message to athletes and team employees that there's an expected standard of conduct. He says athletes should know that they could lose their livelihood for domestic violence beyond facing criminal charges.
He says pro teams should be "positive role models throughout the country."
