Homeless Man Continues Quest To Find Owner Of Diamond Ring

PONTIAC (CBS DETROIT) - Mike Secaur was given a diamond ring in early 2011. He's still looking for the original owner.

Secaur, who has been homeless for several years, was panhandling in Pontiac in February 2011 when a woman stopped her car and gave him a handful of change ... Secaur soon realized that among the change was a diamond ring.

He says he could still recognize the woman who gave it to him.

"I was out panhandling and a woman stopped and gave me a handful of change," said Secaur.

He thinks the woman gave him the ring by mistake and may not even realize that it was among the change she gave at that encounter.

"First thing I thought of was pawning it (but) it wasn't the right thing to do. If she didn't mean to give to me - ending up in the pawn shop would be the wrong thing to do," he said.

No call was placed to police at the time but Secaur had the ring put in a safe deposit box. Fast forward to 2014, and someone at the shelter reminded him the ring was still in a safety deposit box -- and Secaur reached out to the WWJ Newsradio 950 and CBS Detroit audiences to help him find the rightful owner.

Secaur describes the woman as being white, in her late 50s, blond hair, medium build, and wearing glasses. She was driving a navy blue (possibly a Chevrolet) minivan at the time.

Secaur, 49, spent time in the hospital and jail before losing his job and becoming homeless. He says health issues have played a role in destabilizing his work life and furthering his chronic homelessness.

"The hard part is I'm dead broke -- but it's worth more to her than to me, " Secaur said.
