Hikers From Minnesota Find Body At Base Of Michigan Cliff

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - Two hikers from Minnesota discovered a body at the bottom of a steep cliff along Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula while going through photos one of them had just taken.

Police say the body of a 33-year-old Marquette man was recovered Thursday at Presque Isle Park in Marquette. His name wasn't immediately released.

Scott Andrews and Brett Peterson, who were visiting from St. Paul, made the discovery.

"Brett took pictures over the edge of the cliff because he wanted to see how far down it was," Andrews told The Mining Journal. "Then we noticed this bike and got to thinking, 'Well, where's the person with the bike?' I don't think we really thought anything of it, but we decided to look at the pictures and spotted some legs in the picture."

The men yelled down to the person below and called 911 after they didn't see any movement.

Detective Sgt. Greg Kinonen says the man apparently died from a fall. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation, although authorities believe it was an accident.
