High School Football Game Called In 3rd Quarter After Brawl Breaks Out On Sidelines [VIDEO]

WESTLAND (WWJ) - A local high school football game between long-time rivals was canceled in the third quarter after a brawl broke out along the sidelines and now, the student athletes involved could be facing disciplinary action.

The incident happened Friday night in Westland at the game between Wayne Memorial High School and John Glenn High School. And this wasn't just any ordinary game -- at stake was a city championship trophy between the two rival schools.

With just 14 seconds left in the third quarter, a brawl broke out along the Wayne sidelines, involving players and the coaching staff. Although the John Glenn bench didn't clear, some of their players on the field were allegedly involved in the skirmish.

Carla Pucci, who was in the crowd, explained what she thought happened prior to the fight.

"Wayne had the ball, Glenn player pushed player out of bounds on to the Wayne sideline. Wayne players went after Glenn player," Pucci wrote on Facebook. "The coaches went over to pull the players from Glenn out of the brawl and back to the sideline as the players began to attack (or attempt to) the coaches. Glenn players helmets were knocked off and the few athletes from Glenn were being beaten on by 4-5 players each."

Police tell WWJ they were not notified of the incident.

Officials say security at the scene broke up the fight, and no one was injured. No fans were involved in the scuffle.

It's unclear what type of disciplinary action the students might be facing.

John Glenn High School was winning the game 33-6 prior to the fight and ended up taking home the prized trophy.

According to reports, the game will count as a forfeit for Wayne.
