High Levels Of Disinfectant Byproduct Found In Flint's Drinking Water A Thing Of The Past?

FLINT, Mich. (AP) - Flint officials have hired consultants to evaluate the city's troubled municipal water system.

The city said in a news release that experts from Veolia North America met Tuesday with water officials. The consultants are expected to present an initial report to the city in about two weeks.

Flint gets water from the Flint River, but residents complain about the smell, taste and appearance. Flint cut ties last year with Detroit's system to build a line to Lake Huron.

Flint's system last month was in violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act because of high levels of a disinfectant byproduct. Officials say the water now meets all guidelines.

The Flint Journal says that independent tests performed on University of Michigan-Flint's campus found low levels of the byproduct and safe water overall.
