Help A Military Family Have A Merry Christmas With 'Trees For Troops'

DETROIT (WWJ) - Metro Detroiters are helping military families celebrate Christmas through "Trees for Troops" — and it's the last week that English Gardens is collecting donations for the program.

Darrell Youngquest with English Gardens says that — for each $30 donation — the nursery will provide one 6 to 7-ft fresh-cut Christmas tree to a military family.

"They then have to get loaded onto a truck and then shipped out through the partnership with the Spirit of Christmas foundation and Federal Express, to the various military bases wherever the need is," Youngquest said.

Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township is one of 70 bases worldwide receiving trees through the program. This year, Trees for Troops hopes to deliver more than 17,000 trees in total with a majority of those going to military families stationed at military installations across the U.S.

Youngquest says some of the trees even make it overseas.

English Gardens, which has multiple locations in metro Detroit and Ann Arbor, is the only local retail outlet supporting the program this year. [CLICK HERE to see a list of participating businesses nationwide].

Trees for Troops is a A 501(c) organization, and donations are tax-deductible.
