HBO To Launch a Stand Alone Service In 2015

SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) - Fans of the Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire and Six Feet Under and other HBO shows will be able to cut the cord with cable service and will be able to watch HBO on the web.

HBO CEO Richard Plepler stated Wednesday at an investor presentation that the company plans to launch a web-only service in 2015, Recode reported.

In a report by CNET, Plepler reportedly said, "It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO."

Exact details of the service were not released, but the report stated that it will be offered only in the United States.

Currently, only cable customers who subscribe to HBO are able to access the channel's web-based streaming service. It is not known how this new service would differ from HBO Go, and what services will be offered.

With the launch of of streaming service, HBO will be competing against established services including Netflix, Amazon and Hulu.

For those who can't wait until the new streaming service is live, HBO will stream the premiere party concert of the Foo Fighters Sonic Highways show live at midnight Friday from The Cubby Bear in Chicago on its Facebook page.
