Greening Of Detroit: Re-Purposing Vacant Lots Into Outdoor Education Center

DETROIT (WWJ) - Come Saturday, four vacant lots on Detroit's east-side will be re-introduced to the public as a community outdoor education center.

Dean Hay of the The Greening of Detroit says it's important to show people the benefit of green space and native plantings.

"We designed this project specifically so that we would have a short grass prairie, a butterfly habitat and central community gathering space that is about forty foot diameter circle in the very center of it," said Hay.

Hay partnered with the Osborn Neighborhood Alliance to bring this idea to fruition. Students and volunteers installed natural ecosystems which allow for learning about vegetation and its benefits.
