Grand Opening Scheduled For Eastern Market Art Park

DETROIT (CBS DETROIT/AP) — A new relaxation and gathering space has been created for visitors and residents of Detroit's popular Eastern Market area.

A grand opening is scheduled from 5-9 p.m. Thursday for Art Park, which features colorful picnic tables, chairs, benches and flowers. Murals by Detroit-based artists adorn the walls of buildings along the edge of the park.

The park is within walking distance of vendors, growers and farmers who come to the open air market to sell their fruits, vegetables, flowers and other products. Restaurants, other shops and entertainment venues also call Eastern Market home.

Firm Real Estate, which owns buildings in Eastern Market, worked with other groups and community leaders to develop the park as a way to revitalize the area and preserve aspects of its history.
