Gov. Snyder Orders Flags Lowered To Honor Detroit Firefighter

DETROIT (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags lowered to half-staff Monday at the Capitol and other state government buildings in honor of a deceased Detroit firefighter.

Sgt. Vincent Smith died Nov. 19 after he was found unresponsive at a fire station. He was 49.

Flags should be returned Tuesday to full-staff.

Snyder says Wednesday in a statement that "firefighters choose to work in a stressful and dangerous field, putting themselves in harm's way to protect" families and communities.

Visitation for Smith is scheduled Friday at the James H. Cole Home for Funerals northwest chapel. Funeral services will be Saturday at the Greater Life Apostolic Church in Detroit.
