Girlfriend Found Slain in MGM Grand Detroit Hotel, Man Charged

DETROIT (AP) — A suburban Detroit man has been charged after his 27-year-old girlfriend was found dead in a casino hotel room.

Prosecutors say 33-year-old Daniel Michalak was referred Wednesday to a forensic center for competency and criminal responsibility evaluations.

Michalak, of St. Clair Shores, was arraigned Friday on assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to maim and assault with intent to do great bodily harm.

Tia Vellucci's body was found May 29 at the MGM Grand Detroit. Vellucci, of Davison, suffered multiple stab wounds. Her nose also was bitten.

Vellucci's death remains under investigation. Prosecutors say they're awaiting a medical examiner's report and other forensic testing.

Michalak's next court date is Sept. 6.

The Associated Press left a message Wednesday seeking comment from Michalak's attorney.
