Girl hospitalized after accidental shooting in Detroit involving unsecured gun, police say
A 6-year-old girl is in the hospital after police said she accidentally shot herself with an unsecured gun in Detroit on Sunday morning.
Officials said the incident happened at a home on the 8840 block of Artesian Street in the Franklin Park neighborhood on the city's west side around 9 a.m. Officers spent a few hours questioning people inside the residence.
As of Sunday afternoon, the girl is in stable condition.
The Detroit Police Department is investigating the accidental shooting.
Two years ago, new gun safety measures went into effect, including a safe storage law. It requires gun owners to keep unattended weapons unloaded and locked with a locking device or stored in a locked box or container if a minor is present.
There are penalties for violating the act. According to Michigan law, if a minor fires the gun and inflicts harm on themselves or another individual, the person who failed to properly store the gun could face a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison, a maximum fine of $7,500, or both.
