Gilbert: Under Armour Store Coming To Downtown Detroit In Spring 2017

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Following Nike's opening of a store on Woodward Avenue earlier this year, apparel rival Under Armour will follow suit in early 2017.

Billionaire and Detroit native Dan Gilbert made the announcement on Twitter on Saturday night. The 17,000 square foot store will be just a few doors down from Nike's new location, according to Crain's Detroit.

"Dan Mullen, executive vice president of Bedrock, said Under Armour will take the basement, first and second floors of the 1201 Woodward building, which is also occupied by Fathead LLC, another Gilbert company. Mullen declined to disclose terms of the lease deal but did say it's a "long-term" agreement. It's not known how many people the new store will employ or if contractors have been selected."

The store will be located at 1201 Woodward, on the northwest corner of State Street.

Under Armour has other outlet locations in Michigan in Howell and Birch Run. The downtown store, however, will be a "Brand House" location.

Last year, Under Armour had sponsorship deals with current MVPs from the NBA (Stephen Curry), the NFL (Cam Newton) and the MLB (Bryce Harper).

The company was founded in 1996 in Washington D.C.
