Former Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has finally found a landing spot.

The Lions fired him halfway through the 2015 season, in addition to long-time team president Tom Lewand.

But Mayhew is headed to New York now after a few months of job-hunting. The Giants announced Thursday Mayhew will be the team's director of football operations/special projects.

According to the team's release, Mayhew's "football operations" job title will include working with Collective Bargaining Agreement compliance, player contract negotiations and the salary cap. "Special projects" will also be assigned to Mayhew by Giants general manager Jerry Reese, although details of what those projects would include weren't disclosed.

The Lions and Giants actually pulled off a switch in their front office staff: Mayhew took an opening in New York's office, after Matt Harriss was hired in Detroit as the Lions' vice president of football administration. Harriss had previously been New York's director of football operations.

Mayhew spent 15 years in Detroit before team owner Martha Firestone Ford cut the cord in November. He had previously spent time in the Lions' front office as director of football administration/staff counsel, vice president of football administration/legal affairs and senior vice president/assistant general manager.

In Mayhew's place, the Lions hired Bob Quinn away from New England as their new general manager in January.
