Gas Leak May Have Caused Explosion At Kroger Grocery Store
TROY (WWJ) - Officials say a natural gas leak may be to blame for an explosion and fire at a Kroger grocery store in Oakland County.
The incident happened around 10 p.m. Monday at the Kroger on East Long Lake Road and Livernois Road in Troy. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered signs of an explosion with a fire inside the rear portion of the building.
The fire was quickly extinguished and damage was confined to the loading dock area of the Kroger store itself. No injuries were reported.
According to the Troy Fire Marshal, Kroger employees smelled gas earlier in the day and called Consumers Energy, which advised the manager to evacuate the store. After all customers and employees exited the building, crews from Consumers Energy arrived to investigate the possible gas leak, at which time the explosion occurred.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. While it is suspected to be from a natural gas leak, this has not yet been confirmed.
The store is currently closed but is expected to reopen soon.
An investigation is ongoing.
