Funeral Set For Referee Killed During Recreational Soccer Match

LIVONIA, Mich. (AP) - A funeral is scheduled Thursday for a referee who authorities say died from a punch to the neck by a player who objected to being ejected from an adult men's league game.

Forty-four-year-old John Bieniewicz died Tuesday from injuries he sustained June 29. His heart, kidneys, liver and lungs were transplanted to others.

Family friend James Acho says the funeral's at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hosana Lutheran Church in Redford. Viewing will be 2-9 p.m. Tuesday and 2-7 p.m. Wednesday at Harry J. Will Funeral Home in Livonia.

Prosecutors have charged 36-year-old Baseel Abdul-Amir Saad of Dearborn with assault with intent to do great bodily harm. They say they're reviewing the charges in light of Bieniewicz's death.

Defense lawyer Brian Berry says his client isn't guilty of the charges.
