Free Uber Rides Offer Extended For Jurors

MACOMB (CBS Detroit) Running late? Don't know where to park? No worries -- If you're trying to get to jury duty in Macomb County, you can get a ride to and from court from Uber for free.

The pilot program, which was launched in 2015, was so well received it has been extended for another year.

Uber gives a $20 credit each way if you can prove you're on your way to jury duty.

Macomb County Clerk Register of Deeds Carmella Sabaugh says it alleviates the stress of finding a place to park in Downtown Mount Clemens, which has several construction projects underway.

"People who have used it are very happy with it," Sabaugh said.

In a press release, Uber said the goal of the program is to encourage civic participation by providing reliable transportation options for jurors.

"Uber believes that getting a safe and affordable ride should be an option for everyone, everywhere. If we are able to come together as a community to minimize transportation deserts, civic participation will grow. We are excited to be a part of this pilot project and look forward to protecting and encouraging the democratic process in Macomb County," said Mike White, general manager of Uber Michigan.
