Some people don't believe religion and sports mix any better than religion and school.
And that definitely appears to be the case at this high school in Florida, where Fort Myers High School senior tight end Sam Turner scored his first touchdown against Riverdale High School on Friday night. After the score, Turner took a knee and raised his arms to the sky.
This move had been done by another Florida football player -- Tim Tebow. He was known for kneeling after every TD.
"I saw the flag and I was so confused at first," Turner told CBS affiliate WINK.
This is now a penalty in football, and Turner was hit with a 15-yard penalty for "unsportsmanlike conduct."
According to WTSP, Turner is being supported by his family and friends for his prayer after the TD, despite the penalty. Fort Myers High won 49-0.
"I was like, 'Are you seriously flagging me right now? What did I do wrong?' Eventually the ref came up and talked to me and said I was trying to bring attention to myself and I was trying to explain to him that that wasn't the case at all," he told WINK. "I wasn't trying to bring attention to myself I was just trying to thank God."
He also wanted to pay homage to pal JoJo Brunson, who was murdered in a drive-by shooting in April 2013.
Should players be allowed to pray after scoring a TD?
