Former High School Volleyball Coach In Court Challenging Sex Abuse Charges

MACOMB (WWJ) - A former high school volleyball coach is due in Macomb County Circuit Court Monday to determine whether police entrapped him when he was arrested on child sex abuse charges.

Fifty-three-year old Charles Goubert is a former Yale High School assistant volleyball coach.

Police say he tried to arrange a sexual tryst in October with a person he thought was a 13-year old girl.

At issue is whether he was illegally set up by police.

According to investigations, Goubert had posted an ad on a social media website indicating he was looking to meet a 13-year-old girl for the purpose of performing sexual acts on her. Pretending to be a young girl, undercover detectives initiated contact with Goubet via e-mail and text messages.

Detectives arranged to meet Goubert at a predetermined time and location. When he showed up, Goubert was immediately arrested and brought to the Macomb County Jail.

"The Sheriff's Office will be vigorous in their investigation and apprehension of individuals who are attempting to prey on children," Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said in a statement shortly after Goubert's arrest.

Yale Public Schools immediately placed Goubert on administrative leave upon learning of his arrest. A spokesperson said Goubert did not teach at the school, but had been on the volleyball coaching staff for the past decade.
