Former Free Press Photographer, David Gilkey, Killed In Attack In Afghanistan
KABUL, Afghanistan (WWJ/AP) - Afghanistan's president is condemning the insurgent attack that killed an NPR photographer and video editor, David Gilkey, along with an Afghan interpreter Zabihullah Tamanna.
They died in an ambush Sunday while on assignment in southern Afghanistan. According to NPR, two other NPR journalists, Pentagon correspondent Tom Bowman and producer Monika Evstatieva were also in the convoy, traveling in a separate vehicle. They were not injured.
The Afghan president says the Taliban do not distinguish between the military, civilians and journalists.
An outpouring of sorrow and memories of the photojournalist filled social media since his death was announced. Gilkey worked in Detroit for many years and had a number of close friends still working in the newspaper industry.
A NPR report says Gilkey and Tamanna were in an armored Humvee driven by a soldier of the Afghan National Army. All three were killed after the Humvee was hit by rocket propelled grenades in an apparent ambush.
