Former Detroit House of Corrections In Plymouth Finally Gets A Date With A Wrecking Ball

PLYMOUTH TWP (WWJ) The rundown property in Plymouth Township that was once the Detroit House of Corrections will have a date with the wrecking ball.

State lawmakers and the governor signed off on a $4 million appropriation towards its eventual demolition after it was left to rot for years.

Residents like Steve Dyas are looking forward to the next chapter.

"I'd like to see something, I mean businesses move in, a Target, Bed, Bath & Beyond, things like that, would be wonderful," Dyas said.

The state will set aside $4 million to demolish the property, which was once a prison farm for bootleggers in 1861. It later became a maximum security prison, closing in 2004.

Resident Patricia Dunham complained "they just don't take care of the property around there."

Officials say the property was not only an eyesore, but also held back further economic development from this part of western Wayne County.
