Forgotten Harvest Teams With Wal-Mart To 'Defeat Hunger Bowl'
DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - With one in five metro Detroiters not getting enough to eat each day, area Wal-Mart stores have designed a program surrounding the Super Bowl excitement in an effort to help feed those in need.
Forgotten Harvest senior director Mark Burke says the program is called the "Defeat Hunger Bowl" and for five dollar donations, pre-packaged bags of food will be delivered to Forgotten Harvest of metro Detroit.
"Surrounding the Super Bowl, people who come to Wal-Mart can purchase a bag that's already filled with food for five dollars or they could buy their own food and donate it to us. Our Forgotten Harvest trucks will come by and be picking up this food throughout the entire time they'll go back into our warehouse and then be distributed through our agencies," said Burke.
Burke says in 2013, his agency distributed more than 45 million pounds of food to area Detroiters in need.
Wide-receiver with the Detroit Lions, Nate Burleson, took time to sign autographs and other memorabilia for fans at an area Wal-Mart store.
The program runs from January 8 through February 9.
