Forecasters: The Coming Rain Could Stress Snow-Covered Roofs

MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) — Forecasters say rain predicted for Michigan this week could put more stress on snow-covered roofs.

The state got hit Monday night and early Tuesday with another round of snow. Temperatures are expected to warm up for a bit and National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Meade in Grand Rapids says up to an inch of rain could fall Thursday.

Meade says rain will add to the weight of snow, prompting concerns about possible roof collapses.

There have been several roof collapses reported since January across Michigan, mostly at buildings with flat roofs. On Sunday, officials say the weight of snow led to a roof collapse at the Christian Reformed Conference Grounds in western Michigan.

On Monday, The Muskegon Chronicle reports a porch roof collapsed in Muskegon. No injuries were reported.
