Flint Public School District Lays Off Teachers, Staff

FLINT (AP) - The public school district in Flint has laid off 12 teachers, three non-teaching staff and five paraprofessionals.

The cuts were made Wednesday by the Flint district's board of education. The Flint Journal reports six other teachers were cut when their recalls expired.

School board members say that the cuts come from financial necessity as the school district tries to dig out of a $10.4 million deficit. Interim Superintendent Larry Watkins says that the board should expect more layoffs before the end of the month.

Meanwhile, in another cost-cutting move, the board voted to outsource its food service to a company that's partly owned by Hall of Fame basketball player Magic Johnson. Sodexo MAGIC will take over food service July 1 under a $3.4 million contract.
