When it was announced that the Plymouth Whalers hockey team was going to move to Flint in early 2015, many fans thought the team's new name would be obvious:
The Flint Tropics.
An online contest to rename the OHL team was started and the Tropics -- based on the name of the Flint basketball team in the Will Ferrell movie Semi Pro -- was the hands-down favorite, until team ownership stepped in and decided on the Firebirds.
However, the Tropics will still take the ice in Flint -- sort of.
The team announced this week that Saturday will be the inaugural "Flint Tropics Night" at the Dort Federal Event Center in Flint, as the Firebirds will wear Tropics-themed uniforms against the Owen Sound Attack.

The jerseys will be auctioned off after the game and attendees will have a chance to win prizes such as tropical vacations and "special reenactments and video clips from the movie Semi-Pro, tropical themed music, Flint Tropics merchandise and many more fun and entertaining events throughout the night."
