First Round Playoff Series Between Detroit, Boston Begins Friday

CBS DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings beat the odds and made the playoffs for a 23rd straight season, and now comes the hard part. In the first round the Red Wings will face the Boston Bruins, who won the Presidents' Trophy after finishing the season with 117 points in the standings and a record of 54-19-9.

The Bruins and Red Wings have clashed four times this season already, and Detroit prevailed in three of those meetings. Boston defeated Detroit by a score of 4-1 on Oct. 5, when the teams first played each other this season. On Oct. 14, Detroit won the rematch, 3-2. The Red Wings clobbered the Bruins by a score of 6-1 at Joe Louis Arena on Nov. 27. Most recently, the Red Wings beat Boston, 3-2, on April 2 in a thriller in which Gustav Nyquist scored the game-winning goal.

The first-round playoff series between the teams begins Friday, when the Red Wings will travel to Boston for Game 1, which starts at 7:30 p.m. Game 2 will start on Sunday at 3 p.m. The series will come to Detroit next week, when the Red Wings will play Game 3 on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and Game 4 on Thursday at 8 p.m.

If needed, a Game 5 would take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, in Boston. Game 6 would happen in Detroit the following Monday, while a tie-breaking Game 7 would take place the Wednesday after that in Boston. Times for Game 6 and Game 7 have yet to be announced.
