CBS News Detroit

A fire ripped through much of a motel in Southgate, Michigan, early Monday, sending occupants running for safety.

One of the guests told CBS Detroit that he woke up in the night and smelled something odd. He called the front desk to report it. A few minutes later, alarms were going off and a woman was yelling at people to leave the building.

Southgate Police and Fire were sent to the Motel 6 on Northline Road, just off I-75's Exit 37, about 5:44 a.m., a police report said. The initial call was that heavy smoke was near the front office and one of the guest rooms. By the time first responders arrived, flames were seen coming from the roof line.

The building was full of occupants, including children and some pets.

One firefighter had minor injuries at the scene, authorities said.

There were no injuries to guests as a result of the fire, authorities said all of them have been accounted for.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Police have asked people to avoid the area for now.
