Fire damages 8 units at Westland condominium complex

Fire crews remain on scene at Westland apartment complex

Nearly a dozen residents of Woodview Condominiums were evacuated from their multi-unit building when a fire was discovered about 5:15 a.m. Friday at their complex in Westland, Michigan.

Part of the building roof is destroyed, and there is at least partial damage to eight units.

Woodview Condominiums is on Woodview Street near Warren Road, and a short distance to the Westland fire station.

Several firefighters including those from the lead response agency, Westland Fire and Rescue, remained at the scene for a couple of hours. Garden City Fire Department was among the assisting agencies on scene. The American Red Cross also provided immediate assistance to some of the residents.

There were no injuries reported to the residents or first responders.

Westland Fire Chief Darrell Stamper said this was the second time in a week his crews went to the complex, as a fire broke out Thursday at one unit. He said working fire suppression, attentive people and a quick response by fire crews helped keep both incidents from getting worse.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
