Green Oak Township Fire Chief Kevin Gentry was already at the scene of an accident on northbound US-23 near M-36 assisting a motorist before being struck by a separate car at around 4 p.m.

The 2014 Ford Fiesta was driven by Howell resident, 66-year-old Henry Kraatz. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Gentry, 46, was taken to the University of Michigan Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

The freeway was shut down for over two hours while the incident was investigated. Gentry had been with the fire department for many years and was just named Chief weeks ago.
