Fire Burns Press Box Area At Decaying Pontiac Silverdome

PONTIAC (AP) - Authorities say a fire that burned the press box area of the decaying Pontiac Silverdome in suburban Detroit has been extinguished.

No injuries were reported at the former home of the Detroit Lions.

The Oakland Press of Pontiac reports crews from the Waterford Regional Fire Department responded Tuesday morning to the fire, which appeared to have been burning through the night and was discovered by security for the facility.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. Assistant Fire Chief Matt Covey says it was the first fire reported at the stadium since 2012.

The Silverdome opened in 1975, north of Detroit. The Lions played there until 2002, and the Detroit Pistons spent a decade in the stadium.

Officials last year announced that the Silverdome would be demolished.
